INK-BASED DECORATION

METHOD 02

Screen printing built for bold, repeatable graphics.

A proven choice for crisp spot colors, strong coverage and cost-efficient repeat runs on tees, hoodies and team apparel.

DIRECT ANSWER

When should you choose screen printing?

Screen printing can become cost-efficient when a medium or larger run repeats the same bold design, especially on T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts. Ink is pushed through a prepared mesh screen onto the garment; each spot color normally requires its own screen and print pass.

It is less efficient for one-off pieces, many individual variations or artwork with numerous colors. Fabric color, fiber content and dye behavior determine the ink system and underbase.

FIT CHECK

Where screen printing works—and where it does not.

BEST FIT

Choose it for

  • Campaign, event, club and staff shirts with one repeat design
  • Bold vector artwork, team marks and large front or back graphics
  • Orders where unit cost needs to improve as quantity increases
  • Specialty spot colors or strong opacity on dark garments

CONSIDER AN ALTERNATIVE

Not the first choice for

  • Tiny orders with several print colors or frequent artwork changes
  • Photo-real designs when halftones are not acceptable
  • Many unique names and numbers in the same order
  • Unverified polyester or coated outerwear that may migrate, scorch or resist ink

BEFORE WE SPECIFY IT

Four factors that shape the result.

01

Fiber and dye

Cotton, blends and polyester behave differently. Polyester may need low-bleed ink and controlled curing to reduce dye migration; stretch fabric may need a flexible ink system.

02

Color separations

Each spot color is separated for production. Dark garments often need an underbase, which adds a screen and can change the print hand and color build.

03

Print access

Flat, unobstructed panels print most consistently. Seams, zippers, pockets, linings and waterproof coatings can limit placement or require a different method.

04

Run size

Screens and setup make screen printing stronger economically as identical quantity rises. Size breakdowns are fine; artwork, placement and ink colors should remain consistent.

KNOW THE TRADE-OFFS

Limitations to plan around

  • Every additional color increases setup and production complexity.
  • Exact results depend on garment color, ink opacity and whether an underbase is needed.
  • Fine lines, tiny reversed text and tonal gradients require production-ready separations and testing.
  • Polyester dye migration can discolor light inks if the garment and cure are not controlled.

CARE GUIDANCE

Help the decoration last

  1. Turn garments inside out and wash cold with similar colors.
  2. Use mild detergent; avoid bleach and fabric softener where possible.
  3. Air dry or tumble dry low to reduce abrasion and heat exposure.
  4. Never iron directly over the printed area; iron from the reverse on low if required.

Always follow the garment care label and the final approved decoration specification.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers before you order.

What order size suits screen printing?

It becomes more attractive when enough identical pieces share the setup. The break-even point depends on print colors, placements, garment and competing method, so we compare the real order rather than quote a universal minimum.

Can screen printing reproduce a photograph?

Photographs can be separated into halftones, but the result and setup differ from a direct digital print. We assess resolution, garment color, intended viewing distance and acceptable texture first.

Is screen printing durable?

With the correct ink, cure and fabric pairing, it is highly durable. Wash temperature, dryers, abrasion and chemical exposure still affect service life.
